The personal auto policy defines "Your covered auto" as "any vehicle shown in the declarations page" and "Any vehicle which is a private passenger auto or a pick-up or van which has a gross vehicle weight less than 10,000 - ½ ton or ¾ ton, that is not used in business to make deliveries or for transportation of goods ….".
However, you must request that we insure the vehicle within 15 days of its purchase. If the vehicle replaces a vehicle on the policy, the new vehicle will have the same coverage as the vehicle that it replaces. If the vehicle is an additional vehicle, then you will have the broadest coverage provided for any vehicle on the current policy.
Therefore, if you are trading in a vehicle for a new one and the old vehicle has physical damage coverage for Comprehensive Coverage and Collision Coverage, then the new car will automatically have that same coverage for 15 days. If you are adding a new vehicle without selling or trading in one of your current cars, then the new car will have coverage for Liability, Uninsured Motorist, Comprehensive and Collision Coverage equal to the broadest coverage of any of your current vehicles.
When do you need to call us before you pick up a new auto? If your current policy has only liability coverage, you need to call us to add Comprehensive and Collision Coverage for the new vehicle before you drive it away from the dealer's lot. If your new vehicle is going to be used in Business, you need to call us before you pick up the vehicle.
Don't delay calling us as soon as possible! The old auto policies used to give 30 days to notify the company of a new auto. However, the new auto policies have reduced that time to 15 days. Don't let it slip your mind!
